Writing Exercise Worm Bins are Cool

by admin on October 15, 2009

I want to get a some red worms so I can compost my organic food waste. The problem I’m having is that they seem to want an arm and a leg for a pound of red worms. They seem to think that a pound of worms is worth 35 dollars. 2 dollars an ounce seems kind of steep. Maybe the price is so high because the worms reproduce and if you don’t kill them it is unlikely you’ll be coming back for more. Maybe it is because they have big facilities and a high overhead so the price is fair. I can’t be sure but i hesitate to put out so much for a pound of worms.

Still I’ll probably bite the bullet and get a pound of worms and set up a compost bin this winter. I’m leaning towards Big Jim’s Worm Farm. Big Jim’s is the cheapest I’ve found including Ebay and they are fairly close to where I’m living so the shipping time will be short. A short shipping is important in the cold weather. The next thing on my agenda is to get myself a container and bedding. I don’t think I’ll do it quite yet since I need to research bokashi. Bokashi might be a better way to go since you can put more stuff including meat into a bokashi fermenter. well I decide this weekend.

Since worms are so expensive, they sound like a good investment. Maybe I’ll become a worm farmer (or is that a worm rancher) and get rich!
