Raising Fruit Flies

by admin on September 29, 2008

I raise fruit flies for my dart frogs. I use a mix I picked up on a forum somewhere and modified for my own.

The recipe starts like a lot of these mixes with potato flakes. I usually get a big box of potato flakes from walmart . The rest of the mix is high protein chicken feed and sugar, an anti bacterial food preservative, sea salt and rock dust.

I use the following ratios

7 cup of potato flakes

2 cups of chicken feed

1 cup of sugar

2 teaspoons of rock dust( azomite)

1 teaspoon of sea salt

1teaspoon of 50/50 MethylParabens and Propyl Parabens

To make the mix I blend the chicken feed with the sea salt and the rock dust then add that mix to the potato flakes. then I blend the the sugar with the MethylParabens/Propyl Parabens and blend it in to mix them together and grind the sugar. I mix the sugar withthe potatoes and mix thoroughly.

I mix the media 1 scoop of media to two of boiling water though I have used plain hot water with equal success. It is a wet mix so I use 4 or 5 sheets of printer paper to balance out the water . I also add a Iittle excelsior for surface area . I sprinkle a little yeast on the prepared culture after the media cools then add flies.

In the next batch I’m going to try a little water soluble kelp fertilizer and see how it works. I may substitute it for the sea salt or use both. i haven’t quite decided if I’m just over complicating the whole thing or if I’m on to something . Still it works and that’s what to count.
